PHS Big Red Band alumni to meet in parking lot

PARKERSBURG – Alumni of the Parkersburg High School Big Red Band who want to march with the float in the Parkersburg Homecoming Festival Grand Parade on Saturday should report between 9:30 and 10 a.m. at the back parking lot of the high school, an organizer said on Wednesday.

“And of course wear read and white,” said Felice Jorgeson, a former director of the band and an organizer of the 90th anniversary festivities.

The band is preparing a float for the annual homecoming parade, which starts at noon Saturday. The parade forms behind the school.

Charles Mitchell, the oldest band alumni at the age of 98, will participate in the parade and ride on the float.

The band, whose colors are red and white, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. An alumni reunion will be held 6 p.m. Saturday in the band room where participants are asked to bring a covered dish and old photos.

Saturday is a major day for the homecoming. Besides the parade and the band anniversary celebration, the annual News and Sentinel Half Marathon hits the road at 8 a.m. The fireworks show by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale starts at 10 p.m. after the concert at 7 p.m. by Insured Sound and the Queen tribute band, Almost Queen, at 8:30 p.m.
