Lowell set to mark season with Springfest

LOWELL – As is typically the case, organizers and attendees are gearing for this weekend’s annual Lowell Springfest with their eyes to the skies.

“It always rains,” joked Lowell Mayor Dave Pitzer of event, now celebrating its 28th year on Buell Island.

But the chance of rain is only slight during the free Saturday and Sunday event, which will feature vendors, food, a raffle, and more.

Old favorites and new additions should make the festival an exciting one, predicted Pitzer.

“We’re featuring a car show this year,” he said.

The car show will be in addition to the display of antique tractors and steam engines which have become a staple of the event, said Pitzer.

The car show, which will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is organized by the Noble County Cruzers Car Club. However, it is open to the public.

There is $10 entry fee and awards will be given out around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, said Pitzer.

The festival will be kicked off with its usual pomp and circumstance Saturday at 10 a.m. The Springfest Parade will take off from the former Deano’s Pizzeria on Ohio 60 at that time and wind its way to the island, rain or shine, said parade organizer Jim Lenhart.

“I know the Fort Frye band is going to be there. From there on in it’s liable to be a little bit of everything,” said Lenhart of the community parade, which is open to everyone.

After the parade, Lenhart typically heads over to the raffle to sell tickets. Next to the parade, mingling with the community is his favorite part of the spring event, he said.

This year’s festival will feature several vendors, selling wares from crafts to plants and everything in between.

“There’s a nursery which will be selling a variety of vegetables and flowering plants. That’s always a big hit,” said Pitzer.

The festival will feature a variety of food and beverage vendors. The festival helps raise money for the village, which in turn subsidize projects and activities within the village.

The festival runs Saturday and Sunday, with vendors operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission and parking are free.
