Student wins elementary chess tournament

PARKERSBURG – Elijah McIntyre, a sixth-grader from Waverly Elementary, took first place in the 2014 Wood County Elementary Chess Tournament.

The event was held Thursday evening at Jefferson Elementary School. Wood County Elementary Chess Coordinator Lynn Stoll, who also coaches the Kanawha Elementary School chess team, said 28 players participated in the competition. The district has five elementary school chess teams with about 100 players total.

Stoll said last year the district tournament featured about 25 players from two area schools.

This year’s top winners were:

* First place, Elijah McIntyre, sixth grade, Waverly Elementary.

* Second place, Devon VanAllen, fifth grade, Criss Elementary School.

* Third place, Billy Reed, fourth grade, Jefferson Elementary.

* Fourth place, Anthony Jenkins, fourth grade, Jefferson Elementary.

Stoll said officials are looking to expand the tournament next year and are hoping for more chess teams to be formed at the district’s 17 elementary schools. Stoll also said officials are looking for more volunteers to help with teams, meets and the final tournament.

“We have very good support from parents,” she said.
