Charity event set for tonight
MARIETTA – Marietta Middle School will see its share of brawling wrestlers tonight as the Throwdown for the Pound makes its ninth appearance in the gymnasium.
Steve Herron, executive director for the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, said tickets are still available for the event. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the first match is 7 p.m.
“You can still get tickets at We Lov Pets, which are $10, or they are $15 at the door,” he said.
Herron said all kinds of matches would be going on throughout the night and there are going to be some big ones.
“We have A.J. Styles from WCW and from WWE, The Honky Tonk Man,” Herron said. “Those are two of the big names.”
Honky Tonk Man is world-renowned for his WWE career, where he held the Intercontinental Championship for a record 64 weeks, a record that still stands.
Styles has held both the NWA TNA X-Division and the NWA World Tag Team titles.
In addition, Herron said all the regular names would be present.
“It’s for the shelter; 100 percent of the proceeds to the shelter…so it’s to help the animals.”
Herron said the event usually draws around 350 people, but there have been more.
“A good one, we’ll have 450 to 500 (people),” Herron said. “On average, we have 300 to 350. We usually almost fill the gym up; there’s people on the bleachers and the floor.”
“It’s a great family event,” said Herron.
