Catholics to honor donors

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Catholic Charities West Virginia’s Central Region’s 12th annual Communities of Salt and Light dinner will be April 25 at the Knights of Columbus Banquet Hall in Fairmont.

Several people in the Central Region will be honored for their commitment to improving the lives of their neighbors through service.

Salt & Light honorees exemplify the teachings of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop document, Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on the Social Mission of the Parish. Very Rev. Mark Ward, C.P., V.F. said, “The Salt and Light award is a wonderful expression and living out of the gospel mandate to feed the hungry, to quench the thirst, to welcome strangers, to clothe the naked, and to visit the sick and those in prison – the gospel mandate to care for the needs of others.”

2014 Honorees are Lester “Les” Filicsky of Immaculate Conception in Clarksburg, Michael and Denise Roncone of Holy Spirit in Monongah, St. Mary’s High School youth group of St. Mary Catholic Church in Star City, W.Va., and Memorial Award recipient is the family of Louise Urda who was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church in Bridgeport.

She lived a fruitful life and served many years on the CCWVa Central Region Regional Advisory Council.

Filicsky and the Roncones are all active in their parish ministries and likewise are dedicated in their support of charitable organizations and ministries that provide support to the less fortunate in their communities.

St. Mary’s High School youth group is the first recipient of the group honor.

The youth group, led by Faith Formation Director, Kathy Kerzak, successfully took on a project to fund a trailer for a family in desperate need for adequate housing.
