Student designs logo for Vienna River Road Race

VIENNA- A design by a Jackson Middle School eighth grader will grace trophies and mugs at this year’s Vienna River Road Race.

Thirteen-year-old Nia Fernandes created the winning entry, which was selected from dozens of submissions by seventh- and eighth-grade students in teacher Kay Mason’s art classes and honors art club. Awards and mugs given to runners and walkers at the event in April will feature the winning design.

This marks the 18th year of the Vienna River Road Race and the 10th year the design has been created by a Jackson Middle School student.

Fernandes will receive a $50 gift card to use at the Grand Central Mall, mugs featuring her design and will fire the starter pistol to begin the race, Lou Molinaro, race organizer, said.

Fernandes said her design, which features a black stick-figure character crossing a red-bannered finish line, was intended to catch the eye.

“I wanted a really simple but playful design,” she said. “It used color, but not too much color.”

Molinaro said when choosing the winner, Fernandes’ work jumped to the front of the pack.

“It definitely caught my eye,” he said. “Everyone who looked at it said it really stood out.”

The Vienna River Road Race is April 26, with the five-mile run beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5K walk beginning at 8:05 a.m. There will be a wheelchair division with a starting time of 7:55 a.m.

Runners and walkers will start and finish at the Jackson Middle School track. The run and walk are rolling, closed-loop courses. The surface is paved, except for the crushed limestone track.

A team competition will be featured, with one award for each school and church team, based on the number of finishers. Team members are eligible for all other awards, but participants can only be on one team and all members of a team must fill out an entry form.

At 9 a.m. the free River City Kids’ Races will be held, with ribbons given to all participants. Entry forms can be obtained by contacting Molinaro at 1-304-295-5088.

Registration will be April 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and race day from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Kids sign-up will continue until 9 a.m. at the track.

There will be a $12 entry fee for the adult race if entries are postmarked by April 19. Members of the River City Runners and Walkers Club can enter for $10. After April 19 the cost to enter is $15.

Entries can be turned in the day of the race.
