Destination Design scheduled for March 20

VIENNA – Destination Design, the annual fundraising event for Wood County Habitat for Humanity, will be held 6 p.m. Thursday at the Grand Pointe Conference Center,

The auction features vignettes created by area furniture stores and designers with complete rooms planned around a piece of furniture they have given for the auction.

Proceeds go toward building more Habitat homes in Wood County.

In addition to about 40 live-auction pieces, Habitat also is offering a silent auction for the first time. More than 50 donations have been made and more are coming, Lisa Collins, development coordinator, said.

“We have had such tremendous response to our call for silent auction items. They just keep coming in to the office. It’s going to be great fun to have a chance to bid on all these interesting things,” she said.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $45 at the door and include a light dinner, entertainment by Jesse DeBarr and Chad Stevens, plus live and silent auctions.

Collins is encouraging residents to get their tickets as soon as possible. It’s easier to determine how much food to cook, she said.

Nontheless, there’s been much interest in the event, particularly on Facebook where many friends have been asking about the event, she said.

Among donations is the Nickelodeon-inspired curved chest of drawers, donated by Rhododendron Furniture & Design, featuring brightly-colored paintings of underwater cartoon seaweed inspired by Sponge Bob Square Pants.

“We’ve already had people on Facebook as far away as North Carolina asking if they can bid on that one,” Collins said.

The piece has a retail value of $979.

“We are so appreciative of all the donors,” Collins said.

The event raised $11,000 before expenses last year, Collins said. Because of expenses, Habitat cleared $3,500, she said.

However, this year sponsors have been obtained to greatly defray expenses, Collins said.

The goal is $15,000 this year, she said.

“I would love to see $15,000,” Collins said.

The silent auction is new to the event this year, Collins said. Habitat has great expectations for the silent auction, she said.

“We think that’s going to be a great boon,” she said.

Event sponsors include Grand Pointe, West Virginia Central Credit Union, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, DeBarr Trucking, United Bank, Valerie Young with River Valley Properties and the Gift Gallery of Vienna.
