Area schools win Thespian Festival awards

PARKERSBURG – Area high schools excelled at a recent statewide theater competition in Morgantown, taking home some of the competition’s top awards.

The West Virginia Thespian Festival was held March 13-15 at West Virginia University in Morgantown. Teams from Parkersburg High School and Parkersburg South High School participated in the event.

Both schools received multiple honors, including both being awarded trophies for Outstanding Play, the top honor at the festival.

Parkersburg High School received awards for:

* All-Festival Cast – Celia Smith and Karly Hunt.

* Outstanding Duet – Edain Campbell and Celia Smith.

* Outstanding Monologues – Ashley Deem and Morgan Argabrite.

* Costume Rendering, first place – Ashlyn Friend.

Parkersburg High’s theater teacher is Lori Zyla. The team also was given a certificate for Captivating Choreography for its play “Property Rites” by Alan Haehnel, Zyla said.

Parkersburg South High School received awards for:

* All Festival Cast – Brittan Posey, Alli Walker, Maddie Harris and Alex Belcher.

* Superior in monologue – Brittan Posey.

* Special Effects Makeup, second place -Sierra Wright.

* Stage Management, third place – Jessie Mongilio.

South’s theater teacher is Jayne Whitlow. The team performed “Smart Trek: The Dating Frontier” which was written by Eli Tracewell, a 2012 graduate of PSHS.

“The adjudicators were extremely impressed by the play and urged Eli to send the play to a publisher,” Whitlow said.
