River Sweep 2014 date announced

PARKERSBURG – A commission charged with keeping the banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries clean has scheduled River Sweep 2014 for June 21.

River Sweep is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission and covers the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond as more than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris. This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Indiana.

Numerous volunteers are needed, Lisa Cochran, project manager, said.

“We are thrilled to announce the date for the 25th annual River Sweep. It is a special year. Volunteers have made incredible progress cleaning the Ohio River’s shores,” she said. “As more people visit the Ohio River, we continue to find trash and debris. We need volunteers.”

Volunteers can go to www.OhioRiverSweep.org for more details. Site locations will be listed in early spring. Trash bags are provided and each volunteer will receive a free T-shirt.
