WVU-P Veterans Corps plans fundraising events

PARKERSBURG – The West Virginia University at Parkersburg Veterans Corps is raising funds for its My Freedom Wish project.

The project was developed to fulfill wishes of children of veterans who have a special need or disability.

Beginning Monday through Nov. 13, the group will collect donations and sell T-shirts and raffle tickets. The Veterans Corps will hold a luncheon fundraiser open to the public at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 in the College Activities Center.

Tickets are $3 for WVU-Parkersburg students who are veterans, $5 for veterans and $10 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased by calling 304-424-8337 or stopping by the Veterans Services office in room 1214.

Retired U.S. Marine First Sgt. Randall L. Bare will be the featured guest speaker at the luncheon.

A native of Jackson County, Bare is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League and Vietnam Veterans of America. He is chairman of the Governor’s Veterans Council, a judge advocate for VFW Post 3488 in Sandyville, a service officer for American Legion Post 107 in Ripley and a service officer for Jackson County Marine Corps League.

The college also is planning activities for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. WVU-Parkersburg will hold a flag-raising ceremony at 8:15 a.m. in front of the main campus. The Parkersburg High School Junior ROTC will raise the flag and Linda Nichols will sing the National Anthem.

Later that day, the Veterans Corps will participate in the Parkersburg Veterans Day parade.
