Wood County Schools preps for Veterans Day
PARKERSBURG – Schools throughout Wood County will hold a variety of Veterans Day programs for students beginning this week.
At least six schools in Wood County will conduct veterans programs over the next few days in conjunction with Veterans Day.
Edison Middle School has planned a 1:30 p.m. ceremony Thursday to honor veterans and first responders.
Williamstown Elementary School also has a program set for Thursday evening at 5:45 p.m.. The program will include a ROTC, performance by the second-graders and recognition of those family members who are veterans.
Friday, Emerson Elementary will have a presentation on flag etiquette as well as its annual red, white and blue walk, where students dress in patriotic colors and walk the track. Principal Penny Coleman said students are also collecting Halloween candy to donate to troops.
Lubeck School is having a Veterans Day celebration at 1:30 on Friday.
Jackson Middle School is planning two events, involving speakers. Friday, Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret, Woody Wilson will speak to all eighth-grade students about his time in Vietnam. Wilson is a former social studies teacher for Wood County Schools. On Nov. 12, Bob Pioli, a WWII veteran and former German POW from Marietta, will speak to students about his capture and imprisonment.
“I think that inviting veterans in is the only way to teach patriotism,” said Kathy Williams, a social studies teacher at Jackson Middle School.
“Unfortunately, we ask them to go into that part of themselves and bring up painful memories, but I think they know that their stories need to be told so that our students understand the sacrifice that has gone into making this country great.”
Williamstown High School is holding a Veterans Day Assembly at 9 a.m. Nov. 12. Breakfast will be served to veterans and their families beginning at 7:30 a.m.
“The assembly will honor area veterans from WWII, Korea and Vietnam through those currently serving, said Kelly Hendrickson, chairperson of the event. There is an educational assembly led by members of the student council and is held in front of the student body.
