Volunteers from Home Depot do work for veterans

PARKERSBURG – Volunteers from Home Depot worked in Parkersburg and Vienna Thursday on service projects in honor of local veterans.

Around 15 people from the Vienna and Bridgeport Home Depot stores were at the Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley on Seventh Street as well as the Vienna residence of World War II Marine Corps veteran Glen Henson to do maintenance and painting at both locations.

”Every year, Home Depot, as a company, does a Celebration of Service event as an annual campaign,” said Kathy Parsons, Vienna Home Depot store manager. ”It runs from September 11th to Veterans Day (Nov. 11).

”Thousands of Team Depot volunteers complete more than 1,300 service projects across the country to support the needs of veterans and their families.”

The local store got in contact with the museum on what could be done at its location and through the museum, got in contact with Henson to see what could be done for him.

At the museum, they are cleaning the carpets, putting up a new handicapped sign, installing a flag pole and doing other work. Scheduled parking lot work at the museum caused volunteers to postpone a project to repaint the parking space lines.

The Home Depot donated paint for the museum to do painting at Henson’s home; they are painting the interior, installing safety bars and putting in carbon monoxide detectors.

”Part of Home Depot’s core values is giving back and being involved in the community,” Parsons said.

Angela Shoemaker, projects and events coordinator for the Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley, said it is special when a company like Home Depot can help at the Parkersburg museum.

”It means so much to us,” she said. ”This is not something we could have done on our own. It is not something that is in our budget to be able to do, but it is something that we want to do.”

Henson is 87 years old and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the mid-1940s. He said he was having trouble reaching over his head and painting is not something he can do.

He was thankful to the people from Home Depot who came over to work at his home.

This spirit of volunteerism is one of the things that has made America what it is for many years, Henson said.
