Students plant tulip bulbs for Red Ribbon Week

VIENNA – Vienna students planted perennial flowers Friday, an annual reminder, officials said, to refrain from drugs and alcohol.

More than 300 Vienna Elementary School students planted tulip bulbs in front of the school Friday as part of Red Ribbon Week festivities. Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug prevention campaign in the nation. Teri King, Vienna Elementary School counselor, said Red Ribbon Week is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Vienna held most of its Red Ribbon Week activities last week, except the flower planting. It was rained out – twice.

“We did something different each day,” said school principal Julie Handley.

Handley hopes planting the bulbs and the annual flower bloom will serve as a consistent reminder to students to refrain from drugs and alcohol.

“Planting the bulbs will plant the idea in the kids and the flowers coming up each spring will remind them each year,” she said.

Friday afternoon Students planted 500 tulip bulbs in front of the school. The bulbs were purchased by the school’s PTA. Handley said Cub Scout Troop 20, from the Wayside United Methodist Church, prepped the soil as part of a community service project.

Vienna has 322 students pre-k through fifth grade. All but the pre-k students participated in Friday’s event. The pre-k kids were not in session Friday. Handley said they will plant their bulbs Monday.
