Wood-Washington Heart Walk set for City Park

PARKERSBURG – The 2013 Wood-Washington Heart Walk will be Saturday morning at City Park in Parkersburg.

The event will run from 10 a.m.-noon at the City Park Pavilion. There is no charge for teams to register. The event is organized by the American Heart Association.

As the signature fundraising event for the American Heart Association, the Heart Walk promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a fun family environment, AHA officials said. The Heart Walk works to create hope, inspire change and celebrate success for all participants who commit to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke in their own lives.

This year more than 1 million walkers will participate in approximately 350 events nationwide, raising funds to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.

The goal of the 2013 Wood-Washington Heart Walk is to raise $70,000 to help in the fight against heart disease and stroke, officials said.

“There are so many survivors and they are a great focus for our work,” said Sarah Hambley, Heart Walk Director for the American Heart Association. “Seeing that heart disease can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex or race, really makes you stop and think about the fact that anyone can be a victim of this terrible affliction.”

Saturday’s event will begin at 10 a.m. and will offer activities for families, as well as heart-healthy information for all in attendance. The walk itself will begin at 11 a.m. and go around City Park.

Monies raised by the Wood-Washington Heart Walk go toward scientific research through West Virginia University and to education and outreach for heart disease and stroke, the nation’s number one and number four killers.

Among the local businesses who are helping to sponsor this year’s Heart Walk are Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg Cardiology Associates, Peoples Bank (Bank Day sponsor) and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.

“We’re so grateful for all of our wonderful sponsors and walkers,” said Hambley. “Without their help and dedication the Heart Walk couldn’t be as successful as it is here.”

Hambley reminds attendees to look for survivors wearing their special Red Caps.

“If you want to know why you should help the American Heart Association, just look at our Red Cap survivors,” she said. “They are all the motivation you need.”
