Donations accepted for coat giveaway

BELPRE – During the past decade, it’s probably safe to say thousands of coats have made their way to excited people.

Drop boxes are available until Oct. 31 in Belpre, Little Hocking and Coolville for coats, mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, warm clothing (sweaters, sweatshirts etc) and boots for men, women and children. During the 2012 coat giveaway, 417 were distributed.

“It’s so popular in the community,” said Lois Knadler, event organizer and outreach chair for Little Hocking United Methodist Church. “People come from all over. We feel it’s a good ministry.”

Knadler said whatever clothing or coats remaining are given to local clothing banks.

“They find homes one way or another,” she said.

Knadler said the folks at Rockland United Methodist Church always bring them a lot of wonderful items for us.

“All the churches are great about collecting things for us as well as the business,” Knadler said.

One of the drop boxes is at Stahl’s Nursery and Christmas shop in Little Hocking.

“We do this every year,” said Sharon Stahl, manager at Stahl’s and treasurer for the church.

“We are extremely happy to be able to give to families in these economically bad times who can’t afford it,” Stahl said.

Knadler said some organization bring their clients to the distribution day and some teachers will pick up coats for their students.

The distribution will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 9 at the church.

“We enjoy the excitement of the people that find the perfect coat for them,” Knadler said.

Another dropoff location is Ed Hetzer’s State Farm insurance agency at 1102 Washington Blvd.

Customer representative Jennifer Wears has been working at the agency for only two years.

Wears said the main reason the agency participates is to help people.

“It does very well,” Wears said. “We’ll usually fill the tub up two or three times.”
