Warren Men’s Choir to sing at Cavs’ game

BARLOW – The Warren High School Men’s Choir will perform the national anthem at a Cleveland Cavaliers game in December.

“I am elated to go,” said Braxton Harter, a senior tenor on the 24-man troupe that will sing the anthem at the start of the Cavs-Denver Nuggets game on Dec. 4 in Cleveland.

The choir is under the direction of Mary Margaret Nuzum, who shares her students’ enthusiasm.

The Cavaliers front office contacted the school last term and requested a CD with a recording of the choir singing, Nuzum said. The team requested the choir’s performance and recently schedule it for Dec. 4, she said.

Students have been preparing for the performance, Nuzum said.

“We’ve been busy working on it,” she said.

Harter follows the Cavaliers and is the son of Bill and Shauna Harter.

“They couldn’t believe it,” Harter said. “We accomplisted this feat to be recognized nationally at a professional game. That’s something.”

The performance has been a goal for the past several years, said Brogan Davis, son of James Davis and Colleen Davis. Davis, a senior, sings bass.

“It’s going to be a great experience,” he said.

The other 22 members of the choir are Brandon Dowler, Alex Flesher, Andrew Gaughan, Chase Hardman, Robert Henry, Josh Jankauskas, Evan Lynch, Eli Mallahan, Chris Massey, Aaron Mazurkiewicz, Andrew Mazurkiewicz, Corey Newlen, Brandon Pahl, Ryan Potter, Chris Richards, Tyler Schwendeman, Hayden Smith, Andrew Spencer, Zach Sullivan and Tanner Proctor

The choir is holding fundraisers to pay for the trip to Cleveland, Nuzum said. It has held bake sales and is benefitting from parking duties at the Barlow Fair this weekend, she said.

Sponsorships are being sold which will entitle the benefactor’s name to be placed on a T-shirt that will be worn by the singers under their usual tuxedos, Nuzum said. A giant garage sale by the families of the 24 students will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 at the Veto Lake Campgrounds, she said.

Anyone interested in a sponsorship can contact Nuzum at the school, 740 678-2393 extension 1602.

Donations also are being accepted and can be sent to the choir in care of Nuzum at 130 Warrier Drive, Vincent, OH 45784.
