Heartwood in the Hills to be held

GRANTSVILLE – Heartwood in the Hills will be offering various art classes for children and adults beginning in September.

Classes will involve ballet, dance, movement, art and mask-making at the nonprofit school for the arts located near Grantsville in Calhoun County.

Enrollment is now open for the 12-week session which begins Sept. 8 and concludes Dec. 6, with classes meeting weekly.

The schedule of classes includes:

MONDAY

* 5-6:30 p.m.: Ballet 1 for ages 10 and up. The class is an introduction to basic principles of classical ballet. This is a required class for students in the Performing Arts Program. Students in Ballet 1 will attend the Theatre Dance 1 class on Thursday. The instructor is Jude Binder and the fee is $60.

TUESDAY

* 4:45-5:45 p.m.: Introduction to Dance and Theatre for ages 7 and up. The class is an introduction to the fundamentals of dance, with emphasis on the elements of dance, improving strength and flexibility, and increasing dance vocabulary. The instructor is Amy Nicholas and the fee is $40 plus a $10 materials fee.

* 6:30-8:15 p.m.: Dance Technique, focusing on modern, Caribbean, ballet and international folk dance. Binder is the instructor and the fee is $70.

WEDNESDAY

* 4:45-5:45 p.m.: Artwork for Kids for ages 8 and up. The class is lessons in symmetry, color, design and conservation education. Binder is the instructor and the cost is $40 with a $10 materials fee.

* 6:30-8:15 p.m.: Movement for Health and Centering for teens, adults and seniors. The class teaches how to move comfortably and no previous dance experience is required. The instructor is Binder and the cost is $70.

THURSDAY

* 5-6:30 p.m.: Theatre Dance for ages 10 and up. The class involves studying balance, coordination, rhythm and movement, including elements of ballet and modern dance. This is a required class for students in the Performing Arts Program. Students in Theatre Dance 1 will attend the Ballet 1 class on Monday. Binder is the instructor and the fee is $60.

* 6:45-8:30 p.m.: Intermediate Ballet for teens, adults and seniors. Previous ballet experience is required. The instructor is Binder and the cost is $70.

FRIDAY

* 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Maskmaking for teens, adults and seniors. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult helper. Students will be guided through the process of creating tarlatan masks as seen in Heartwood productions. Binder is the instructor and the cost is $75 with a $15 materials fee.
