Mission fundraiser event set for Saturday

PARKERSBURG – A fundraiser for the Latrobe Street Mission is scheduled for Saturday at the 14th Avenue Gospel Mission Church with festivities starting at noon and ending with a Gospel sing.

“The money raised from this event will be used for our kitchen. We are feeding around 70 people a day. We are in desperate need of funding for this project,” said Shad Martin, with the mission.

The mission is at 1825 Latrobe St. It provides emergency shelter for men, women and children, a kitchen, dining room facilities, showers and restrooms, longer term transitional housing of 12-18 months and a thrift shop. In its first few months in operation, the mission served more than 300 people through its emergency shelter and growing number of services, Martin said.

The mission opened its doors in December with three people and grew to 95 by the end of the first month, according to Martin.

The Gospel Mission Church is partnering with Torch Baptist Church to sponsor Saturday’s fundraising event, which will be held at the Gospel Mission Church at 4124 14th Ave., Parkersburg.

There will be a silent auction, pig roast with pulled pork sandwiches, hotdogs, snow cones, cotton candy, baked goods and more. The Gospel sing will include local groups New Life Quarter, New Legacy, Mission Trio and others.

Entertainment will begin at noon to 1 p.m. with Otis Cochran; Gospel Mission singers from 1-2 p.m.; Krusade from 2-3 p.m., Bob Lyons from 3-4 p.m., and Sarah Richardson from 4-5 p.m.

There will be children’s activities including face painting, corn-hole toss and more. There will be team/doubles corn-hole tournaments starting at 12:15 with trophies and T-shirts to be awarded.
