Local law enforcement officers hold 2013 torch run
PARKERSBURG – Local law enforcement officers participated in a torch run Tuesday to help kick off the 2013 Summer Games for Special Olympics.
Slated to begin Friday in Charleston, the summer games will feature more than 700 athletes from around the state, including Wood County. The games run through Sunday.
Tuesday’s torch run began at the Hardee’s on Pike Street and ended at the Hardee’s on Grand Central Avenue in Vienna. Officers from the Parkersburg Police Department and the Saint Marys Correctional Center participated in the run.
John Corbett, CEO of Special Olympics West Virginia, took part in Tuesday’s run and said similar events will be held in other counties in the days leading up to Friday’s Special Olympics kickoff in Charleston.
Corbett said Wood County law enforcement has been a good partner to Special Olympics over the years, raising money for the program and hosting events.
“We appreciate these law enforcement officers who devote their time to our cause,” he said.
