Helping hands boost humane society

MARIETTA – If her wide, beaming smile was any indication, Trilla Williams is happy to be going home today.

Williams, 56, of Marietta, entered The Arbors in January for rehabilitation. However, before she was able to leave, she decided she had to do something to help her community.

Almost single-handedly, since the day she came to The Arbors, she has spent many hours painting and decorating birdhouses, boxes of seashells and handmade note cards, Many of her creations, she said, were or could be lit with a simple clip light.

“They are beautiful lit up,” Williams said.

Her husband, Albert, 55, did help her with the drilling and assembly of the birdhouses.

“I love animals, kitty cats and doggies,” Trilla Williams said. “If I can do something for the pets and animals, I’ll go the hundred yards. There aren’t enough people to care about them. The public doesn’t care.”

Williams also set out to organize a silent auction and bake sale Wednesday at The Arbors to raise money for the Humane Society of The Ohio Valley and the Marietta Foundation.

“It’s amazing that one vision she has – to help the community in some way,” said Susan Schmidt, life enrichment director at The Arbors. “Even though she was in rehabilitation, she dreamed this up to help her furry friends. Just dreaming it isn’t enough.”

Williams pointed out several of her projects that were her favorites, especially a green box of shells and a birdhouse with a green base. She recalled working on those during the early morning hours.

“When I was doing them, they gave me such peace,” she said.

According to the humane society website, donations of pet, cleaning and office supplies and tool are always needed and welcome. The shelter has about 140 dogs and cats ready to be adopted.

Schmidt also said the shelter on Mount Tom Road is in desperate need of kitty litter, according to shelter representatives on hand for the fundraiser Wednesday.
