Reading camp now accepting applications

PARKERSBURG – Applications are being accepted for the Reading Railroad Reading Camp to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 5-9 at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Parkersburg.

Class size is limited to 18 and is open to students in grades 2-4. Parents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

For more information and applications for campers and volunteers, call the church at 304-428-1525 extension 12 or go to www.readingcamprocks.org/parkersburg.

The camp is a free, week-long, all-day program to build reading skills, self-confidence and self-esteem in an informal setting. Reading Camp includes 15 hours of small group and one-on-one instruction in key reading skills and with afternoon activities to reinforce and strengthen academic and social skills. Afternoon activities will include field trips, games and science experiments and breakfast, lunch, snacks and all supplies will be provided.

Wood County Schools Superintendent Patrick Law has approved the program.

West Virginia Poet Laureate and award-winning author Marc Harshman will be a guest at Reading Camp.

Applications also are being accepted for volunteers, such as teaching a specific reading skill, mentoring a group of 2-3 children in the morning or afternoon, helping to prepare or serve meals, leading or helping with afternoon activities and preparing supplies.

Older teens and young adults are especially encouraged to serve in the afternoon as mentor and counselors, providing the children with healthy role-models. Most volunteers need to commit to serving the entire week with the exceptions being leaders of one day activities, those helping with one-on-one pleasure reading and visiting celebrities.
