National Day of Prayer to be observed locally
PARKERSBURG – Communities around the Mid-Ohio Valley and nation will celebrate the National Day of Prayer Thursday.
The cities of Belpre, Marietta, Parkersburg, Vienna and Williamstown will participate in ceremonies throughout the day in observance of the event.
The theme for this year is “Pray for America” and is based on the verse from Matthew 12:21, which states: “In His name the nations will put their hope.” More information is available at the official website at www.ndptf.org.
The National Day of Prayer, signed into law by President Harry Truman on April 17, 1952, is intended as a time when members of all faiths can join to pray in their own way for the world, their country and each other.
Vienna will start the day’s programs at 10 a.m. with the event in front of the city building at 609 29th St.
Two programs will begin at noon in Williamstown and Marietta.
The National Day of Prayer observance has been a tradition in Williamstown for more than a decade, according to City Councilwoman Barbara Lewis. The program is organized annually by the Williamstown Ministerial Alliance and will take place at Williamstown City Building on W. Fifth Street.
The program will feature the Pledge of Allegiance, a proclamation by Mayor Jean Ford and prayers with a performance by the Williamstown High School Choir.
In Marietta, the event will be held on the steps of the Washington County Courthouse with Marietta and Belpre city officials and church leaders as well as military personnel.
Beginning at noon, leaders from Washington County will converge at the steps of the Washington County Courthouse to observe the 62nd National Day of Prayer.
In Parkersburg, an interdenominational program featuring pastors from several area churches will be 7 to 8 p.m. at Fort Boreman Park overlooking downtown Parkersburg.
Organized by the Wood County Ministerial Association, the event will feature a series of prayers by local clergy on local, national and world issues; interspersed with the prayers will be musical selections .
