Annual fundraiser to help feed the hungry

MARIETTA – Empty Bowls 2013, a luncheon to “help feed the hungry,” will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the First Congregational Church, 318 Front St.

Hand-made bowls will be donated by area potters; soups will be donated by Marietta restaurants; bread and rolls will be donated by Panera Bread and The Bread Garage; home made desserts will be donated by members of the First Congregational Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and the First Unitarian Universalist Church.

For everything, the cost is $10. For lunch only it will be $5. The majority of proceeds go to the Marietta Area Food Pantry, with other area food pantries receiving pro-rated gifts.

Melissa Rohrer, local potter, said that Empty Bowls was initiated by art teacher John Harton during the 1990-91 school year, when he joined a drive to raise charitable funds in his Michigan community.

Harton’s idea was to organize an event to give artists and art students a way to make a personal difference in the fight against hunger. Harton’s students crafted ceramic bowls. The finished products were then used as serving pieces for a fundraising meal. Guests kept the empty bowls. During the next year Harton and other participants developed this concept into Empty Bowls.”

Potters who have supported the project are Henry Aglio, Ted Barth, Julie Brewer’s Harmar School fifth grade class, Becky Deegan , Melissa Rohrer-Acorn Potter, Joyce Tharp’s Frontier High and Elementary students, Mandy Douglass of the Parkersburg Art Center, Katy Ferguson of KTsPottery, Carol Geroza, Ken Gilbert, Sandy Gekosky of Kaplan-Gekoskky Pottery, Sherm Koons, Margaret Lazer, Joan Palmer, Cathy Vessels of University of New Mexico, Jonathan Walsh and Parkersburg High School students, and Zach Orcutt of WVU-Parkersburg.
