Vienna Road Race logo winner chosen
VIENNA – Awards and mugs given to runners and walkers at the 17th annual Vienna River Road Race in April will feature artwork by a Jackson Middle School student.
Nilum Patel, an eighth-grade student, said she wanted to submit a simple design. Patel, of Vienna, is the daughter of Janak and Rupal Patel.
“I just wanted it to be simple and straight to the point,” she said. “When I found I had won I was really surprised. I was shocked.”
Lou Molinaro, race organizer, said Patel’s artwork stood out to anyone looking at the entries.
“When we looked at all of them it jumped out at us,” he said. “My daughter was visiting from Columbus where she is an interior designer; she looked at it and said ‘Dad look how good this is.'”
Kay Mason, art teacher at Jackson Middle School, said this is the tenth year the school’s art program has supplied the race’s logo.
Patel said she plans to pursue art in high school and beyond. She said she has thought about a career related to her artwork.
“I was thinking about being an architect or maybe a graphic designer,” she said. “I’m not really sure yet.”
Mason said for nine years the race logo has been chosen from works submitted from students in the honors art club at Jackson Middle School in Vienna. Students in the club must qualify by submitting a portfolio and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.
Top three racers in the 13 age categories will receive mugs printed with Patel’s design.
The Vienna River Road Race is April 20, with the five-mile run beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5K walk beginning at 8:05 a.m. There will be a wheelchair division with a starting time of 7:55 a.m., Molinaro said.
Runners and walkers will start and finish at the Jackson Middle School track. The run and walk are rolling, closed-loop courses. The surface is paved, except for the crushed limestone track.
A team competition will be featured, with one award for each school and church team, based on the number of finishers. Team members are eligible for all other awards, but participants can only be on one team and all members of a team must fill out an entry form.
At 9 a.m. the free River City Kids’ Races will be held, with ribbons given to all participants. Entry forms can be obtained by contacting Molinaro at 304-295-5088.
Registration will be April 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and race day from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Kids sign-up will continue until 9 a.m. at the track.
There will be a $12 entry fee for the adult race if entries are postmarked by April 13. Members of the River City Runners and Walkers Club can enter for $10. After April 13 the cost to enter is $15.
Entries can be turned in the day of the race.
