BELPRE — Riverview Credit Union will join 56,000 credit unions around the world in celebration of International Credit Union Day on Oct. 17 and will conduct a month-long collection for a Marietta food pantry.

Residents on Oct. 17 can go to either of Riverview’s offices in Marietta and Belpre, 403 Main St. and 39 Acme St., respectively, to learn about credit union membership.

A free lunch will be served at both offices beginning at 11:30 a.m.

“At Riverview, we provide the same services of other financial institutions but are guided by the ‘people before profit philosophy,'” said Doug Ankrom, president and CEO of Riverview. “We celebrate ICU Day because credit unions empower people, wherever they are in the world or life, to take control of their financial future. Plus, they are owned by the members, not shareholders, so the money stays in the local communities.”

At the most basic level, a credit union is a group of people pooling their money to provide each other with affordable loans, he said.

“It’s literally people helping people,” Ankrom said. “This cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities for people all over the world who’ve wanted to start a small business, own a home, or improve their financial well-being but were denied access to other financial institutions.”

Riverview also will hold its fifth annual Food Drive to support the Gospel Mission Food Pantry in Marietta.

During October, the public may drop off donations of food and other basic necessities or make monetary donations at either Riverview office location.

International Credit Union Day has been observed since 1948. The first credit union can be traced to the 1840s and a democratic consumer cooperative formed by weavers in Rochdale, England.

Riverview Credit Union is a federally chartered, member-owned financial cooperative founded in 1968, with offices in Belpre and Marietta. Membership is open to any individual who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Washington, Noble, Morgan, or Monroe Counties in Ohio, or Wood, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt, or Jackson Counties in West Virginia. Membership is also open to family members of current members. Learn more about Riverview at Riverviewcu.com
