Step up to the line of scrimmage with Pigskin Picker Contest
PARKERSBURG — Winning isn’t everything.
It’s the only thing in the New Pigskin Picker Football Contest sponsored by Par Mar Stores.
The contest, a derivation of the popular football picking contest of years past, begins on Tuesday with the first full-page entry form in The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.
Contestants each week will choose the winners and scores of local high school teams and selected college and professional games.
The page will appear every Tuesday through Jan. 28, coinciding with Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2. It must be submitted to The News and Sentinel by 5 p.m. on the following Friday, advertising manager and organizer Mary Jo Miller of The News and Sentinel said.
Entries can be submitted by mail to the New Pigskin Picker Football Contest, P.O. Box 1787, Parkersburg, WV 26102, or hand-delivered to the newspaper office at 519 Juliana St. across the street from the parking garage.
No photo copies will be accepted, Miller said. Contestants can submit as many entries as they wish.
“But they have to be the page from the newspaper,” she said.
Each week a winner will be chosen from among the winning entries for a $100 gift card from Par Mar Stores, a leading gasoline convenience store in the Mid-Ohio Valley, Miller said.
Contestants will pick the winners of 12 games. The tie breaker is a prediction of the combined point score of the first game in the weekly match ups, Miller said.
The tie breaker for Week 1 will be the combined score of the Belpre-Fort Frye game.
A drawing will be held once a month for a $500 gift card from Par Mar Stores with the winner chosen from all entries submitted for the month, she said.
Twenty-one $100 gift cards and five $500 gift cards will be awarded, Miller said.
Miller and Lisa Northcraft, advertising director for The News and Sentinel, cite both the popularity of high school and college football in the region.
“Football is an important part of the Mid-Ohio Valley,” Miller said. “Par Mar Stores and The News and Sentinel are proud to present this to the community.”

In addition to the contest, The News and Sentinel on Aug. 29 will publish its 2019 edition of the “Pigskin Preview,” a local cornucopia of all things football from local high school and college teams. It includes schedules, interviews with coaches and players and photographs of this year’s teams.
“Pigskin Preview” will be in the Thursday Aug. 29 newspaper.
