First Fridays events slated in Marietta

MARIETTA — The Marietta Morning Rotary Club and Marietta Main Street will partner for the remainder of the 2018 calendar year to expand First Fridays programming for the city of Marietta and the surrounding communities.

Marietta Main Street hosts programming in downtown Marietta on the first Friday evening of every month to celebrate and spur downtown economic development. The Marietta Morning Rotary Club, which meets every Friday at 7 a.m., will host a social and service program during their meeting to expand First Fridays programming overall.

“We are excited to partner with Marietta Main Street to expand the First Friday activities,” said Shannon Thompson, president of the Marietta Morning Rotary Club. “Our programming will be fun, service-based and unique. We look forward to having guests come to the meeting and enjoy what we love so much about our club.”

The Marietta Morning Rotary Club’s program on Aug. 3 at 7 a.m. is themed “Our Favorite Children’s Books” to extend Marietta Main Street’s August First Fridays Theme “Once Upon A Time” sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta. Rotarians are asked to bring their favorite childhood books to the meeting and several will be read aloud.

After the meeting, the club will donate the books to the Boys and Girls Club Reading Room. Children, grandchildren and neighbors of Rotarians are welcome to attend as a Rotarian’s guest. The meeting is at Marietta Country Club and is $10 per guest.

“Since launching First Fridays in 2016, we’ve experienced quite a spur of growth for our own organization and for downtown,” said Cristie Thomas, executive director of Marietta Main Street. “Not only have First Fridays shoppers supplemented the revenue of small businesses and that of our local economy, but the optimism of our community has increased; more than before, people are active, getting involved, and proud to call Marietta their home. We are excited to partner with the Marietta Morning Rotary Club to diversify the First Fridays experience and are grateful for their commitment to this community.”

The First Fridays themes for the remainder of the year are:

* Sept. 7: Back to School Bash, sponsored by Washington State Community College

* Oct. 5: Witches Night

* Nov. 2: Kids Market, sponsored by Marietta College

* Dec. 7: Moonlight Madness, sponsored by Peoples Bank Theatre

The Marietta Morning Rotary Club will host its annual Dictionary Project on Friday, Sept. 7 in conjunction with “Back to School Bash.” Other coinciding events will be scheduled soon.
