Wood County Schools seeks career day speakers
PARKERSBURG — Wood County Schools is looking for guest speakers for the annual eighth grade Career Day.
The day-long event will be held Dec. 15 at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. Middle school students throughout the county will meet with area professionals to learn about careers in the Mid-Ohio Valley and beyond.
The event is coordinated by the district’s middle school counselors, who are actively searching for speakers to talk about their careers.
“We have so many kids interested in so many different occupations that we would love to add new speakers to our sessions,” said Van Devender Middle School counselor Christina Bixman.
Bixman said officials are especially looking for lawyers, doctors, nurses, architects, forensic analysts, pharmacists, graphic designers, game designers, photographers, hair and makeup artists, trade workers and chefs or bakers.
“We are happy to have any occupation, though,” she said.
Students are asked to begin thinking about possible career interests and academic paths in eighth grade. At Career Day, students pick from 16 career clusters to determine which speakers they’ll meet. Those clusters include hospitality and tourism, law enforcement, information technology, manufacturing, marketing, architecture, education and other possible careers.
Anyone interested in being a speaker at Career Day or who would like more information on the event can contact Bixman by email at cbixman@k12.wv.us or by calling 1-304-420-9645.
