Business camp for students to be held in Marietta

MARIETTA — Students will have the opportunity to explore the manufacturing side of a business and learn about creating their own business at the second annual Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship Camp Monday at the Ely Chapman Education Foundation next week.

Beginning on Monday, students can have the opportunity to get that first-hand look at local manufacturing environments and talk face to face with local business entrepreneurs.

“I have a feeling that entrepreneurship is the biggest job opportunity in our area,” said Alice Chapman, Ely Chapman Founder. “I want the children to see how to start their own business and learn the importance of math and English when it comes to starting a new business. Math and English is also important on the manufacturing side of things and the children need to understand that.”

Students will visit local manufacturers including Skuttle Manufacturing Company, Pioneer Pipe Inc., Micro Machine Works, Inc. and will look at local training opportunities at both the Washington County Career Center and Washington State Community College. Students will also visit with local entrepreneurs including Ohio Foothills Custom Catering where they will learn about food truck and catering operations.

“We will also bring them to the Epicenter where students will be able to talk with the small businesses we house here in the incubator,” said Tonya Davis, Building Bridges to Careers coordinator.

Davis said that the idea is to show the students what options they have when thinking about their future.

“This also breaks down stereotypes with females. Girls make excellent welders but don’t usually think of that as an option,” she said. “Students have to make the decisions about what track they want to take earlier and earlier. This makes this decision easier by informing them about what they can do.”

The Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship Camp runs from Monday through next Friday all day from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Anyone interested can contact the Ely Chapman Education Foundation by calling 740-376-9533. Spaces are limited but still available.
