PARKERSBURG — A new pizza shop opening in Parkersburg has a familiar name in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Laymoni’s Pastime Pizza at 327 Juliana St. will open 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and is the result of a partnership of Richard and Merilyn Layman and Mark Duckworth.

A former owner of Pastime Pizza in Marietta for three years, Richard Layman said the parlor is putting on the final touches and is counting down to opening day.

“We’re excited, from owning a pizza parlor, making homemade brick oven pizzas to having a place that even looks like a typical pizza parlor. I think people are going to enjoy it,” Layman said.

The opening will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Pastime Pizza in Marietta, he said.

Layman said the Laymoni’s pizzeria is a different company than the one in Marietta, but Laymoni’s Pastime will be using the same recipe from the original.

Layman’s sister, Paula Oates, owns Pastime Pizza in Marietta, located on Greene Street.

Bob Schlicher Sr., Layman’s uncle, opened the Marietta Pastime pizza parlor in 1967.

Since then, Pastime in Marietta has been run by different members of the family.

Laymoni’s in Parkersburg is about two blocks from the Parkersburg-Belpre Bridge, making it easily accessible for residents of Parkersburg and Belpre.

The hours of the pizza shop will be 1-9 p.m. Sundays, 10:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Monday-Thursdays and 10:30 a.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Customers can dine in the restaurant, order takeout or have it delivered, Layman said. The phone number is 304 428-8456.

The restaurant will seat about 50 people, Layman said.

Laymoni’s will offer pizza with the traditional toppings, submarines, calzones, salads and soft drinks, but beer is on the horizon, he said. Layman also owned Kreamy Kreations at the levee in Marietta and plans to also offer ice cream and frozen yogurt later this year.

The building most recently was once a barbershop and beauty salon and a computer repair shop, he said. It is located next to attorney Rob Tebay’s office.

“We put a lot of hard work into it and we look forward to serving Parkersburg and Belpre,” Layman said.

The building is leased to the Laymans by Tebay. It was once a townhouse, a pool hall and an insurance office and the lot was owned by the Mellon Family in Pittsburgh, Tebay said.

The structure is more than a century old and originally had a different roof line, Tebay said.

“It predates 1900,” he said.
