Manchin aide to join Marshall University Research Corporation

PARKERSBURG — A long-time aide to U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin announced she was leaving to go to work for the Marshall University Research Corporation.

Sara Payne Scarbro, who was Manchin’s deputy state director, will become an associate vice president of external engagement starting March 1. The research corporation encourages economic development.

Scarbro has been with Manchin for 12 years, starting when he was governor.

“When I chose Sara for my team over a decade ago, I knew that she had a deep passion for our state, great ability to build partnerships and an unique talent to handle tough situations – all characteristics that will serve her well in the future,” Manchin said.

Scarbro called Manchin “an amazing statesman, a wonderful boss and a great mentor.”

Her husband, Derek Scarbro, is the director of intergovernmental affairs for Gov. Jim Justice. He was the governor’s campaign manager, director of his transition team and was executive director of the state Democratic Party 2009-2013.
