Scots Landscape holds Pink Day

VIENNA – Scots Landscape Nursery of Vienna held its second annual Pink Day Breast Cancer fundraiser on May 31.

The nursery raised three times as much this year, which will go into the West Virginia Breast & Cervical Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Fund to help women in need get mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.

The check was presented to Joan Parsons, director, of Mid-Ohio Valley In The Pink, a local nonprofit breast cancer organization, by Michelle Young, marketing director of Scots Landscape, and a certificate was presented to Scots Landscape in appreciation for its support.

Scots chose to get involved with this project because breast cancer is a cause that is close to many of their customers, Parsons said. Hosting Pink Day is a way for them to show their commitment to the community by bringing together breast cancer survivors, concerned residents and loyal customers, she said.

Approximately one in eight women runs the risk of developing breast cancer in their life.

“We all probably know someone that has been affected by this terrible disease. Hosting this event is a great opportunity to have fun and raise money for a good cause,” said Jamie Witkosky, owner of Scots Landscape.

The WV Breast & Cervical Cancer Diagnostic & Treatment Fund was created by the state Legislature in 1996 and provides financial assistance to West Virginia women who are in need of diagnostic and/or treatment services for breast and cervical cancer. Women must be recommended by their health care provider and meet eligibility guidelines.

Community organizations assist the fund by planning fundraisers throughout the year.

One such organization is Mid-Ohio Valley In The Pink, a 501 (3) nonprofit organization established in June 2009. Its mission is to raise funds for the treatment program by bringing the surrounding cities together as a whole to raise public awareness about the importance of early breast cancer detection and screening, Parsons said.
