Barlow Fairgrounds to host Farm Safety Day

BARLOW – A Farm Safety Day on July 26 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Barlow Fairgrounds will be hosted by the Washington Soil and Water Conservation District.

This is a free event, open to the public. RSVP is required.

It will include a mock farm accident rescue, several breakout informational sessions and safety demonstrations for farmers/landowners, emergency personnel, and youth. Lunch will be provided.

According to the Center for Disease Control, agriculture ranks among the most hazardous industries, with approximately 1,823,000 full-time workers employed in production agriculture in the U.S. in 2010. From the 2010 data, 476 farmers and farm workers died from a work-related injury, resulting in a fatality rate of 26.1 deaths per 100,000 workers.

On average, 113 youth less than 20 years of age die annually from farm-related injuries (1995 -2002), with most of these incidents happening to youth 16-19 years of age (34 percent), a press release states.

Of the leading sources of fatal injuries to youth, 23 percent involved machinery (including tractors), 19 percent involved motor vehicles (including ATVs), and 16 percent were due to drowning, officials said.

With the peak productive season upon us, join the WSWCD for a day of information to help lower these statistics, the agency said. To learn more or to register, call 740-373-4857.
