Hotel to host wine-tasting event
PARKERSBURG – The Counseil Interprofessional duVin de Bordeaux from the Bordeaux region of France, known for producing among the best wines of the world, is attempting to enter the West Virginia market.
The group will hold its free Trade and Media Tasting Event from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at the Blennerhassett Hotel.
The event will kick off the Bordeaux campaign in West Virginia.
The program will be led by Robert Cavanaugh, a West Virginia native and a wine expert approved by the Bordeaux Wine Counsel.
The event is aimed at educating companies and people on the front lines of wine sales about the diverse wines that originate in the Bordeaux Region. Representatives from the industry are invited, including restaurant owners, servers, retailers from specialty wine shops and grocery stores with wine sections, chefs, hotel owners and managers and anyone who sells or serves wine.
The four-hour tasting event is exclusively focused on professionals in the hospitality and wine sales, distribution and retail industry to introduce them to a wider variety of wine and aid them in helping customers better understand Bordeaux wines. In addition, media agencies throughout the state also are invited to attend the event.
It will feature between 50-60 wines and educational seminars from some of the foremost Bordeaux experts in the country and tools and materials aimed at enabling attendees to continue learning and discovering Bordeaux after the event.
Four Bordeaux experts will run the seminars and answer attendee questions, a rare gathering of minds and skills not typically seen at events outside of France.
“Bordeaux is investing in West Virginia because they believe that this state is a wide-open market that is ready to explore the complexities and enjoy the diversity this wine has to offer,” Cavanaugh said. “The state is gaining a reputation in the hospitality and food and wine industries for being open to new experiences and bold in its approach to culinary trends. It’s the perfect place for Bordeaux to have a presence.”
The Trade and Media Tasting Event is the kick-off to the Bordeaux campaign in West Virginia. Afterward, Cavanaugh will travel the state promoting the wine in a variety of arenas and to a number of audiences.
Also on Friday, Cavanaugh will conduct a public Bordeaux tasting during the Taste of Parkersburg. “Discovering Bordeaux” begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Blennerhassett Hotel and will feature eight Bordeaux wines.
Attendees will learn how to taste, judge and evaluate wines. Cost to attend this event is $50 per person.
“These events serve as the launch to what I know is an exciting time for wine lovers in this state,” Cavanaugh said.
“I’m excited to expose West Virginia hospitality and trade wine tradespeople to more nuanced versions of this wine, to continue educating consumers about the Bordeaux region and to start it all in Parkersburg.”
The Taste of Parkersburg continues from 5-11 p.m. Saturday at Bicentennial Plaza by the hotel. Food vendors will serve until 9 p.m. and wine vendors until 10 p.m.
