Local designer chosen to attend national trade show

WILLIAMSTOWN -Nikki Butler of Williamstown will be participating in the Buyers Market of American Craft at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on Feb. 16-18.

Butler is the owner of Nikki Butler Design, which she began in 2011. She creates her own designs, has them produced on fabric, and then crafts her own line of clothing and accessories produced from her textiles.

Butler’s products are featured at Tamarack, The Resort at Glade Springs, WV Market (in Morgantown and Snowshoe), Mountain Made, Twisted Sisters Boutique in Marietta and several other specialty shops in West Virginia and Ohio.

Butler is one of nine West Virginia artisan entrepreneurs who are collaborating with the Tamarack Foundation to sharpen their marketing skills and expand their businesses at the buyers market. The 2012 show attracted representatives from more than 1,200 galleries and more than 30 media companies from the United States and Canada, according to a press release.

Butler’s new collection “Avenue B” will be unveiled at the Philadelphia market. The collection includes feminine skirts, reversible belts, resort shirts, infinity scarves and clutch purses available in 11 new fabric designs.

“I am excited” about attending the national trade show in Philadelphia, she said. Butler said she is inspired by her love for contemporary fashion and vintage textiles. She likes her design fabrics to be lightweight silk and cotton twill and likes organic cotton.

She designs and prints the tags for her clothing line and accessories. Her mother, Barbara Robinson of Marietta, helps Butler with the sewing for her business.

Butler exhibited her creations in the “Women in Fiber: from Craft to Art” at the Hermann Fine Arts Center Gallery at Marietta College, has made costumes for the theater department at Marietta College and has done wedding dress alterations.

Butler recently won the “Made in West Virginia” award for fashion and accessories from WV Living Magazine. She lives in Williamstown with her husband and four children. She is a graphic designer with Stonewall Marketing in Marietta. More information on her line is available at nikkibutlerdesign.com.
